An SR22, also called a certificate of insurance, is a form providing proof of insurance, to the Department of Public Safety. It is typically required for drivers who receive a no insurance ticket or DWI. The driver is usually required to maintain the insurance and SR22 for 1 year.
Not all companies provide the SR22. A driver who needs the SR22 must locate a company that offers this type of insurance. Once the policy is purchased, the SR22 form will be signed by the underwriter at the company, and sent to the Department of Public Safety. It cannot be signed by your agent.
In most cases, the SR22 is attached to a car insurance policy. However, if the person does not own a car, they may qualify for a non-owners policy. This type of policy will also satisfy the SR22 requirement.
